We knew that there were two refreshment stations and a refreshment stop indoors at the Regenstein Center with a full menu of food and drinks. The trail was well lit, accessible and attended by helpful Garden staff members all along the way. The Lightscape walking loop was one mile in length and was centered on the Garden’s main island. Everyone was excited and moving with childlike joy. The flow was always orderly and peaceful. Everyone could take as much time as they wanted or needed at Lightscape after entering the event. The admittance of the crowd was staggered in waves according to everyone’s ticket “departure” time. Taking the temperature of the event, I would have said that the weather was mild, and the mood was heating up with excitement.

I’d like to think our collective energy kept the rain away during our window of a few hours. We knew of course that it would be dark, which was good, but we feared that it might rain, as in pour. One never knows what the weather forecast will predict in late December. “The Fire Garden is really cool! It’s ethereal, a little spooky and spectacular!” The Feast of Light cannot possibly give anyone their fill of its overabundance of immersive phasing lights and colors.

A tunnel of crabapple trees transforms into an intimate canopy of purple lights. Perhaps not every snowflake is unique but, these snowflakes–textured by the sandy walkway–are absolute standouts. Old meets new, East meets West, and ancient art meets new perspectives at Lightscape. The Waterfall of Light honors the growing season with its everflowing streams of brilliance. Stillness of winter radiates in bathed warm light. Horaijima, the island of Everlasting Happiness, offers a glimpse of tranquility unattainable by mere mortals. A forested walkway of Singing Trees, each tree with its own choir voice, leads visitors through a soundscape. Otherwise known as the Rose Garden, we are treated to the lively Fire Garden at Lightscape. Up close, the attention to detail such as this color matching tape is astounding. The first sight of Lightscape immediately draws gasps and inspires a multitude of photos. The one-mile Lightscape loop on the Garden’s main island is previewed in full detail for all visitors.
